MoFo #11: Lula’s Sweet Apothecary in NYC

I ate at Lula’s for “dinner” three nights in a row during my trip. Lula’s rotates a bunch of different flavors of ice cream (all of which they offer samples), and offers sundaes, cones, bowls, soft serve, banana splits, and brownie sundaes, and the owner, Blythe, is absolutely awesome. I found myself at this cute little vegan ice cream parlor in Manhattan’s East Village three nights in a row, and I’m certainly not complaining.

The first night we went to Lula’s I got a banana split. This is coffee, strawberry, and maple waffle ice cream with marshmallow topping, hot fudge, coconut whipped cream, and a cherry on top.

The next day I decided to get something lighter, and wanted to try as many varieties of what Lula’s has to offer, so i got a twist soft serve cone. This is what soft serve is supposed to taste like. MMM.

This was my last trip, on Sunday night. Nestled underneath the whipped cream and cherry is caramel ginger cookie and rocky road ice cream. Not pictured, was another scoop of coffee ice cream.

I’m so sad to be back in Milwaukee.

P.S. My pants actually still fit.

Comet Cafe, Milwaukee and Mail Order Cookies

I’ve blogged about Comet Cafe before and referred to it as “the Chicago Diner of Milwaukee”. Every time I go there, it just keeps getting better and better. The first time I went there I was eyeing this sandwich called the Open Face Meatloaf Sandwich that could be made vegan. The description read that it was Comet’s homemade meatloaf with a scoop of chive mashed potatoes, all on top of rye bread and covered in beer gravy. I was finally brave enough to try it last week when I went to lunch with my friend Chris.
I was expecting it to be absolutely ridiculous, but WOW. At the bottom of the plate there are two slices of rye bread, topped with two huge pieces of seitan meatloaf, a scoop of mashed potatoes, a really thick beer gravy, and fried onions and tomatoes. It was sooooo good.
